Trauma-Informed Yoga Basics | Online Live Stream

by Kyra Haglund, LCSW, SEP, E-RYT500

This live stream training will take place on Zoom. Offered in collaboration with Collective Resilience and Empowered Spaces

http://collectiveresilienceyoga.com/
https://empoweredspaces.net

Trauma-informed Yoga Basics (TIYB) provides an integrative framework for understanding how trauma and chronic stress impact the body and mind. The training focuses on yoga, mindfulness, somatic practices, and meditation, and their ability to reduce trauma and stress symptoms and cultivate a greater sense of well-being.

This training will equip you with relevant theory, tools, and in-person practice to better support trauma survivors as they befriend their bodies and reclaim a sense of safety and empowerment in their lives.

TIYB covers:

  • The autonomic nervous system & stress response
  • The Polyvagal Theory
  • Overview of Attachment Theory
  • Somatic Therapy tools for resourcing (informed by Peter Levine’s method of Somatic Experiencing, as well as Pat Ogden’s Sensorimotor Psychotherapy and various other modalities of movement)
  • Yoga practices & somatic meditations for greater self-regulation
  • Trauma-informed language and cueing
  • Cultivating inclusivity
  • Practice teaching
  • Yoga and trauma-healing as social justice

This is Module 1 of the Trauma-Informed Yoga (TIY) Foundational course. Ingrained in all TIY trainings is the understanding that systemic patterns of trauma, privilege, marginalization and oppression (such as poverty, racism, ableism, and homophobia among others) must be addressed in order to cultivate healing for all individuals. This philosophy is unpacked at-depth in Module 2.

Module 1 is open to people of all levels and all backgrounds; you do not need any specific training prior to attending, although we strongly recommend having a current yoga practice. We believe this training will be most helpful for yoga teachers, social workers, therapists, health care professionals, educators, community service personnel, and activists looking for tools to support sustainable healing from trauma and chronic stress.

Kyra Haglund is a yoga teacher, clinical social worker, Somatic Experiencing practitioner, and activist. She lived and studied holistic arts & cultural anthropology extensively in India and Nepal and completed her graduate studies in social work from the University of Southern California, focusing on mental health, military social work, family systems, and public policy. She is also certified in Somatic Experiencing, a mind-body modality that works directly with the nervous system to relieve and resolve symptoms of trauma.

The Y12SR program presents a framework for addiction recoverythat includes the cognitive approach of 12-step programs, the trauma healing approach of Somatic Experiencing and body-based approaches of yoga and mindfulness.

Using material from ancient texts, trauma research and modern neuroscience studies, we’ll learn how combining cognitive and somatic approaches can support changes in brain patterning. Y12SR training equips participants with the knowledge, understanding and application of yoga and the 12 steps. Participants will gain the tools to offer weekly Y12SR classes in their communities.

In this 4-day 24-hour training, we will:

• Investigate yogic and 12-step principles as a foundation of recovery.

• Recognize the symptomology of unresolved trauma and nervous system dysregulation.

• Discover sustainable ways for self-regulation and stress management that enhance physical, mental and spiritual well-being.

• Recognize the traps of projection, transference, counter-transference, boundary violations and spiritual bypass.

• Develop a network of professionals including trauma experts and others in the addiction recovery treatment field.

This is a combination of the Y12SR Intensive and the Leadership trainings. This training results in full Y12SR certification.

Yoga & Social Justice | Online Live Stream

by Hala Khouri & RW Alves

This live stream training will take place on Zoom. Offered in collaboration with Collective Resilience and Empowered Spaces
http://collectiveresilienceyoga.com/
https://empoweredspaces.net

Yoga & Social Justice (YSJ)is a deeper dive into how trauma impacts us at the individual, institutional, and systemic levels AND how trauma-informed yoga teaching can help pave the way for more resilience and equity in our communities.

We will explore how trauma impacts the brain and body while simultaneously looking at how systemic and institutionalized patterns of trauma and structural violence are at the root of social justice issues such as poverty, racism, ableism, and homophobia, among many others.

Through a socio-political framework we look at the conditioning that creates and reinforces supremacist systems of oppression and inequality. We will also reflect on, and unpack, our individual locations in these systems. This is vital for yoga teachers and any space holder to do in order to truly serve their students.

Yoga & Social Justice draws on principles that call for union, truth, and work towards liberation for all. Throughout the training we use practices of yoga, embodiment, and mindfulness as tools to bear witness to and build capacity for transforming the trauma of our socially unjust society, rather than simply as a means to spiritually bypass them. We also teach how to use these regulation practices as a means to build greater resilience and to support healing and transformation within ourselves, our students, and our communities.

YSJ covers:

  • How trauma impacts individuals and communities
  • Social justice basics- what is it and how does it impact all of us?
  • Strength and resilience in marginalized communities
  • Connections between yoga, trauma, oppression and resilience
  • Intersectionality
  • How identity, positionality, privilege, and marginalization impacts us
  • Harm reduction in yoga and other healing spaces
  • Specific tools for teaching more inclusively
  • How to show up as a teacher with students in various settings and with different identities and experiences
  • Ways to use our practice and teaching to create social change

This is Module 2 of the Trauma-Informed Yoga (TIY) Foundational course. Ingrained in all Collective Resilience trainings is the deep connection between the mind and body and how trauma and chronic stress impact them collectively. The integrative and physiological framework for understanding this, along with relevant theory, tools, and practices, is explored in Module 1.

Module 2 is open to people of all levels and all backgrounds; you do not need any specific training prior to attending, although we strongly recommend having a current yoga practice. This training is valuable to all folks interested in being more trauma and social-justice-informed. It may be especially useful for yoga teachers, social workers, clinicians, health care professionals, educators, community service personnel, and activists looking for more equitable & sustainable approaches to healing trauma, and for folks wanting to engage in trauma-informed and trauma-healing work from a social-justice lens.

Hala Khouri, MA, SEP, E-RYT, has been teaching yoga & the movement arts for over 20 years. She is also a therapist trained in Somatic Experiencing, a body-based psychotherapy that addresses trauma & its symptoms. Hala is a co-founder of Off the Mat, Into the World, a non-profit that bridges yoga & activism within a social justice framework, and is co-creator of Collective Resilience Yoga and its curriculum. She leads trauma-informed yoga and social justice trainings nationally and online, as well as weekly yoga classes in Venice, CA where she is based.

How many times have you had a teacher tell you one thing, only to have another teacher tell you the opposite? The yoga world is filled with alignment cues and alignment belief systems that sometimes contradict one another. So confusing!

In this 3-day series, we will focus on yoga postures and highlight the common misalignments in each pose, study the effects on the body, and talk about alignment cue trends to figure out what is working and what is not. This is a class for serious students of yoga, as well as yoga teachers. You will be given an opportunity to practice teach alignment cues, and offer teaching aids as well as adjustments. At the end of our time together you will walk away with renewed knowledge and a fresh approach to the way you teach (and practice).

This training is appropriate for students who want to deepen their practice, as well as yoga teachers.

This course qualifies for 13 hours of credit in the Yoga Tree Continuing Education Program.

Additional Info

*How does the LTP 300-hour program work?

The core curriculum of the LTP 300 is spread across four 50-hour modules for a total of 200 hours. Each module is five days in duration and focuses on a different aspect of advanced teaching and asana, and includes 45 contact hours and 5 non-contact hours with Pete and other senior LTP faculty.

The remaining 100 hours of study will be tailored to each student’s teaching focus and interests. This allows students to pursue advanced workshops and trainings that will benefit them most as a teacher, and also includes 50 hours of mentorship with Lighting the Path faculty. All hours and enrollments are pre-approved by the Pete G Yoga team in order to apply towards 300-hour completion.

What makes the training different?

• Universal teaching concepts.

• Individual practice and development.

We know that every teacher is different. The LTP 300-hour program allows teachers to develop their own style and specialization, while offering a curriculum that provides a broad base for advanced instruction. Each module enables enrolled students to cultivate necessary skills for effective and heart-centered teaching: deep knowledge of asana, alignment and modifications, classroom presence, consistency, and authenticity. The program will cover components of running and expanding a successful yoga business, integrating other passions into yoga offerings, and holistic print and social media marketing.

Lighting the Path Registered Yoga School is designed to be experiential. Intensive morning yoga practices help students embody the skills being taught in afternoon sessions. Students work together and individually to build classes and workshops that can be used right away and tailored to specific student populations. Trainees will receive constructive feedback on their teaching, and develop a plan for expanding their presence in the classroom.
